Chinese Shar Peis - Information - Buying a Puppy from a Responsible Breeder
Shar-Peis should be as old as 8 weeks of age before going to a new home. When deciding to purchase a Shar-Pei puppy, the first step to take is to contact the local Kennel Club. The Club has information about breeders. Information already obtained should also be followed up.
Seeing both parents of the litter is a must. While the puppies might be still a little awkward and uneasy with strangers, the adult dogs must not expose any aggressive behavior. In addition, a better idea of what the puppy will be like can be acquired when looking at both parents. An early socialization process should already be started and some of its results, such as no fear of the surroundings, are likely to show. Responsible breeders often keep the litter in their home.

Both parents and puppies should be tested for diseases and conditions, typical of the Shar-Pei breed, and examined by a veterinarian. It is essential to receive a written health guarantee with the puppy, as the Shar-Pei is prone to many genetic ailments. Only a responsible breeder is genuinely interested in breeding Shar-Peis for model health and temperament. They are aware of the peculiar history of the breed and therefore, wouldn't encourage poor quality breeding.
Pet-quality Shar-Peis may be costly and show-quality dogs are gaining in worth.
